Children and Young People

From ice skating to health advice, from arts and crafts to football tournaments, there’s no shortage of opportunities for young people through New Deal for Communities.   Giving young people the chance to try new things is a key part of New Deal’s work – and there are loads of activities doing just that.

For three lucky West End youngsters, the new Hat Trick project brought a chance to rub shoulders with England footballers at their training session before the St. James’ Park clash with Azerbaijan.

The Hat-Trick project, which is backed by the Football Association as well as New Deal, will bring new opportunities through football for boys and girls in our area.

And Hat-Trick is just one of the initiatives making an impact. Over thirty local groups used grants from our Children’s Activities Fund to run activities like ice skating, football, art and drumming, while the Youth Inclusion Programme (YIP) won a commendation at the national New Deal for Communities Achievement Awards hosted by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Hundreds of young people have enjoyed activities through the Youth Inclusion Programme (YIP), learning new skills ranging from go-kart maintenance to DJ skills.   Another new project, Youthwise, is linking with schools and community groups to raise awareness of drug and alcohol issues.

The Key Fund offers young people the chance to plan and organise projects and activities for themselves, gaining skills and confidence as they go. The scheme offers the chance for groups of young people to earn amounts of money and learn through something that interests them - like activities, events and trips away.

New Deal has also backed local youth organisations like the West End Youth Enquiry Service (WEYES) and West End Women & Girls to help young people keep healthy through advice, support and activities.

And the popular summer activities programme means that no one should be stuck for things to do in the holidays – there’s plenty on offer, from football tournaments and painting, to arts and crafts and barbecues.
