Royal Visit 2007

Prince William visited the West End in October to see how football is helping to change the lives of young people...and he brought his boots.

The young royal visited the Centre for Sport to meet youngsters involved with the Hat-Trick Project, backed by New Deal and the Football Association.

First, he took part in a classroom discussion with primary school kids and then joined a group of Westgate Community College students for a kick-about. The prince, who became FA President last year, exchanged high-fives with team-mates from Westgate Juniors (pictured above), representing China in a 'World Cup' competition.

Later, he presented a Fair Play award before attending a lunch-time reception. Other guests included Brian Barwick and Sir Trevor Brooking of the FA, as well as Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort, team favourite Steven Taylor and England women's international Jill Scott.

The event showcased things like the Hat-Trick Academy and Neighbourhood Football League, while the prince also saw Hat-Trick's team of players, coaches and referees in action.

The visit promises to bring national attention to Hat-Trick, which was established in 2005 to create new opportunities for young West Enders through football.

Hat-Trick Coordinator Mark Oliver said: “Encouraging young people to take exercise and live healthier lives is one of my top priorities.

“But it’s not just about keeping healthy. Sport brings so many other benefits as well; helping to improve confidence, making friends and learning to work as part of a team.”

A new Hat-Trick brochure was produced in time for the royal appointment and can be downloaded in our publications section.
