Neighbourhood Renewal Area (Arthur`s Hill, Elswick Triangle and the Wingrove Terraces)

It's underway!

Work has now started on a keenly awaited makeover for streets in Arthur's Hill, Elswick Triangle and Wingrove - thanks to a partnership between Newcastle New Deal for Communities, Bridging NewcastleGateshead and the City Council.

Following the City Council's declaration of Elswick Triangle, Arthur’s Hill and Wingrove as a Renewal Area – meaning a major commitment to the area’s future, and a big opportunity to bring in extra resources to regenerate the area - work has now started on improving Croydon Road and Wingrove Road.
Croydon Road - first to benefit

The Renewal Area will improve the fronts of houses (things like gates, walls and fences) as well as tackling issues like litter and antisocial behaviour, and encouraging better management of local housing. This will boost the local housing market - and more importantly, means better homes and a more attractive environment for local people. The later phases depend on us being able to secure more funding, but the partners are working hard to make sure that happens.

Work is programmed to start first on the houses that most need improvement, and the latest details are all set out here.

What the work will include
The amount and type of work will vary - it depends on the style and condition of each house - and it may include:

  • Repair, renewal of boundary walls, fencing, railings and gates
  • Front elevation repair works (e.g. pointing or rendering)
  • Repair/renewal of gutters and rainwater pipes
  • External redecoration
  • Hard and soft landscaping (things like paving, walls, top soil or shrubs)
  • Repair/renewal of front windows and doors

This is an ambitious project: it will take several years to complete, and the partners will need to secure further funding for the later stages of the scheme. But rest assured, we're working hard to make sure that happens.

We have tried to ensure that the blocks which contain properties in the poorest condition can be tackled first - making sure that we have as big an impact on the area as we can, as quickly as possible.

With this in mind, the early stages of the scheme will include these homes:

Phase One (started early 2007)
1 & 3 Agricola Road
3-87 Wingrove Road (odds)
4-52 Wingrove Road (evens)

Phase Two (started early 2007)
4 Brighton Grove
2 Callerton Place
13 Fenham Place
3-177 Croydon Road
283 Stanhope Street
389 Westgate Road
