The Community Regeneration Team
Helping local people to make a difference in their own neighbourhoods

“To include all local people in bringing about the lasting changes they want to see to improve our lives now and for years to come…”

New Deal’s mission statement

Take a quick look at the words above and you can see that New Deal has always aimed to put the community at the centre of its work.

But for six West End residents, these words have quickly become a way of life. For the six members of New Deal’s Community Regeneration Team have the job of helping local people to make a difference in their own neighbourhoods.

The team were new to paid community work when they were recruited in 2003, but all six had been involved in their own communities on a voluntary basis. So with support and training from an experienced management team, they are already making an impact while picking up useful skills and qualifications along the way.

The team's work gives people a chance to get together with the neighbours and do something for their area. Staff can can offer groups all the help they need to get started, get organised and start running activities or dealing with local issues.

Fun Day: a special sports day gave Jubilee estate residents the chance to have their say on local issues

One group making a big impact is the residents’ group on the Hawthorn Estate, whose estate walkabout led to a tidy-up of the area, with walls and fences getting repaired and rubbish cleaned up. The group followed this work with a highly successful Fun Day on the estate and a series of family days out.

In time, every part of the New Deal area will benefit from the Neighbourhood Improvement Programme – a chance to pinpoint local issues, develop an action plan to deal with them – and have a real say in how New Deal’s money is spent.
