If it works, let's keep it

As a ten-year programme, New Deal can only offer money to projects for a fixed period. Now in our eighth year, several projects are coming towards the end of their New Deal funding.   But that doesn’t have to mean the end of their work.

By working with partners like the City Council, Business Link and Northumbria Police, we try to ensure that New Deal services can continue – if that will benefit local people.   And while we can’t claim a 100% success rate, several New Deal-backed services have secured their future – and that’s good news for the West End.

A £1.5 million investment from New Deal has kept an extra 12 police on the beat for five years. With crime down by over a fifth, Northumbria Police are so impressed that they have pledged to keep the team going after its New Deal funding ends.

It’s a similar story with our business advice service, whose support for over 100 local traders led Business Link to pick up the tab for its future.   Vital health work is set to continue at West End Youth Enquiry Service, now that the Primary Care Trust has agreed to foot the bill, while a Community Kitchen facility is on offer again thanks to the Park Centre.
